New Law Requires You Have Access to Your Medical Records

Writer: Raye Elaine, BCPARaye Elaine, BCPA

A new Federal law goes into effect today that requires all healthcare organizations to give patients full access to their healthcare records. While many healthcare organizations already offer this, this law expands what records must appear.

I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to take advantage of this resource. Being fully informed about your healthcare can help you take control of your healthcare and be a partner with your providers in guiding your care.

If you are not comfortable with computers and internet, ask a family member, friend or advocate to help you can always request hard copies of everything in your records, simply ask for them after your visit. Then keep them in a binder with all of your records, notes about your visits, and questions for your provider.
